Beyond the news of domestic violence or discrimination, on this March 8, there is no shortage of inspiring examples. The Mayor of Dimal, who was elected in 2015 breaking prejudices, is completing her third and last term. She is an inspiring example for all, especially for women in politics.
Juliana Memaj in front of Helidon Haliti's canvas outside of every frame as well as the city it represents, has confessed how she was able to gain the trust of her community. "I believe that luck is like looking for it in a way. They were skeptical about me at the beginning of my candidacy in 2015 because I was the first woman to run in such an area, even more rural. But I overcame this prejudice with the result itself at the time, but also with the fact that together with the staff we did very good work in coordination and cooperation with the community. And the president himself at that time, who selected me as a candidate, believed in my candidacy. I was a girl who came from a simple family, always trying and dedicated to work, raised with lots of love and above all love for people", says Memaj.
Mayor Memaj believes in meritocracy and speaks out against free quotas in the lists of political parties in elections.
"I believe in skills and meritocracy. It is not a matter of gender being in a certain task. Because at the end of the day we are of one nature, so human nature is the same. It has nothing to do with being a man or a woman to be determined, courageous, to be visionary, which are things that both sides, both genders have these qualities. We were at a meeting representing Albania in a meeting with women in Turkey, and there I emphasized in my speech that being a representative of a community is not a matter of gender. I am glad that in Albania there is an increase in the representation of women in decision-making, but I believe that in the selection made by the representatives who have the power to select the candidates, it was also a matter of meritocracy, I don't think it is a matter of gender. And for me personally I don't think it would be good to have quotas in lists.
In general, women are more committed. Not that men don't work, but women take things a little more seriously. And there in the administration, the ratio is almost fair, but the women are the ones who are most dedicated to work," Memaj declares.
Memaj does not hide her desire to continue this contribution to the city and the community even after the end of her term as mayor. "Being or not being a part of politics is not just your wish. Anyway, I have tried to give my best in these years and I say with all my heart that I love the community that I represent because they really are wonderful people. However, I try to become more knowledgeable every day, find time to read and focus on another direction, that of my profession, so that I don't leave it behind. I am a lawyer and lawyer by profession", declares Juliana Memaj.
In addition to the mural project in the city that took place in the international media, Juliana Memaj will also be remembered for her initiative to change the name of the city, from Ura Vajgurore, to Dimal. "Actually, it was a long process, I can't say very difficult because the name Ura Vajgurore itself is a name that comes from the communist period, it is a designation established in '74 by the Executive Committee of that time. But the fact that the kerosene reserves are no longer in the territory had lost its meaning. I am glad that thanks to a legal process and by consulting with the residents of the area, we finally managed with the support of the government and the Assembly, based on the law, to change the name to Dimal Municipality, which is a presence more dignified because it also contains history", she says.
But unlike what we are used to when women engaged in public life prefer to have one or two children, Juliana Memaj is the mother of 4 children, while she does not hesitate to say that she would also like a fifth child. "It is the most beautiful thing that can happen to a mother or a family, let's say. Having children is the most beautiful thing and I actually think I have about four children. My dream has been 6 or 7. In fact, my wish is for me to have a fifth child, but my husband hesitates on this part. I think I will fill his mind because with my persistence I have achieved this. The names were decided by the head of the family and they are very beautiful names, significant because they also come from the mythology with which we are all very much in love", emphasizes Memaj.
