US immigration agents shot and wounded a man inside his car on Thursday - in the presence of a child - in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York, according to the mayor, city police and eyewitnesses.
Federal immigration agents have shot at least 21 people since Republican President Donald Trump returned to office - seven of them fatally - sparking protests across the US.
Critics argue that Trump's push to increase deportations has led to a growing number of violent clashes and accuse the administration of avoiding holding the agents involved accountable for their actions.
Trump has declared that many immigrants should be deported, blaming them - often on general charges - for financial fraud and violent crimes.
"Initial reports indicate that agents surrounded (the man) and a 5-year-old child in his car, before shooting multiple times," New York City Council member Zohran Mamdani said in a statement.
“I spoke on the phone with President Trump and Secretary (of Homeland Security) Mullin, negotiating the release of the man who was shot by ICE agents. Those negotiations were unsuccessful,” Mamdani said at a late-night news conference. He said he had asked the Trump administration to have ICE cease its law enforcement operations in New York City.
“These actions are making the city less safe,” Mamdani said.
“This city wants ICE out. We want ICE out of our city, out of our schools, out of our hospitals, out of our streets and stay away from our children.”
The mayor said the child in the car was not physically injured. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced that the NYPD found the child in the care of a relative after a check to verify his condition.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE's parent agency, stated that ICE officers were conducting a "targeted law enforcement operation" in the Bronx, New York, to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic who had a prior criminal conviction.
The man, identified as 28, had been arrested twice in New York City, in 2023 and 2025, according to NYPD Commissioner Tisch.
“During the incident, an ICE officer fired a gun and the illegal immigrant with a criminal record was injured,” DHS said, adding that ICE officers provided immediate assistance.
"The individual is alive and is in a local hospital."
