Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti , has stated that the issue of electing the president must be resolved before the country goes to new elections.
Kurti said that without an elected president, Kosovo could face elections within hours, while the appeal issue, according to him, cannot be resolved immediately.
"We will not be able to start dealing with the appeal issue next year, but this month. Without a president today, the country is in elections for months," Kurti declared.
He warned that if the president is not elected, the country could go to new elections as early as midnight.
"Tonight at midnight we can go to the elections as if nothing happened," Kurti said, adding that the issue being discussed takes time and that the adoption of a law would not bring an immediate solution.
According to Kurti, the current priority is unblocking the presidential election process.
"The first thing we need to do is remove the obstacles we have between us, and that is the president's issue," he said.
" They don't want cooperation or meetings. We're four steps away from their meeting, they're not even towards us. They don't even meet, they even issue ultimatums ," Kurti said, referring to the PDK.
But Kurti also made them an offer: If PDK publicly pledges to secure at least half of their MPs' votes for Bekim Sejdiu, then we will proceed with the vote on the second reading.
"From last night's meeting, we left the possibility of a meeting today. But since Hamza will not meet with me. You know that I have not spoken in these four meetings. I wanted and want an agreement, but now Hamza has conditioned us and refuses to meet. That is why we have no other choice but to address you like this. How can an agreement be sought without a meeting? We had voted for Vlora Çitaku as vice-president, while Ardian Gola did not need the votes of the PDK, we voted for the statement on The Hague, we called an extraordinary session and we first decided on the draft law on the Specialized Chambers, which we had approved in the Government. The conclusion of these was when we voted for the law in principle, it is a principled vote. These are concrete actions that prove cooperation in good faith. I have invited them to a meeting for two years now, they started coming three weeks ago and now they are refusing. They are demanding 34 blank votes from Vetëvendosje and they themselves "They are not even half as strong as Vetëvendosje. We have to beg them and now we can't even meet them anymore. It's about saying that they have the support of the citizens, which they don't. We have it, Vetëvendosje is the winner of the elections. Today we have two concrete responsibilities, electing the president and voting on the law," Kurti said.
" Let's elect the president today and I pledge that the draft law on the Specialized Chambers will be passed on Thursday. We cannot violate the regulation because of the Constitutional Court's ruling ," he said.
