Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

In a lengthy interview with Fox News, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that it is the United States that must decide whether to end the war.

"We did not choose war, we were attacked and we had to defend ourselves. This war was imposed on us. When we can resolve issues through dialogue, we should not resort to killing each other. But because of Israel's provocations, this war was imposed on us," the Iranian president declared.

"However, we do not want to continue it. It is America's choice whether to end it or not," Pezeshkian noted, reiterating that Iran is ready to reach a deal with President Donald Trump to end the conflict.

"Why did they choose to blow everything up just two weeks after the agreement was signed?" he asked, referring to the collapse of the fragile ceasefire.

"If the current US administration wants to reach an agreement within the international legal framework, fine. Otherwise, whether before or after the (US midterm elections), what difference does it make to us? The Houthis do not take orders from Tehran," Pezeshkian insisted.

Washington and its allies, including Saudi Arabia and the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government, accuse Iran of supporting the Houthi militant movement, responsible for launching ballistic missiles against the kingdom and fighting Riyadh-backed forces for control of Yemen.

"The Houthis are responsible for their actions. They do not take orders from us: they act as a resistance force in the region, according to the situations that are imposed on them," Pezeshkian said, according to a translation provided by Fox News.

"We have contacts with them, but there is no systematic relationship," he added.

The statements come after meetings held by Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
