French President Emmanuel Macron has warned the country's political leaders about the growing threats that, according to French intelligence services, are linked to Russia's hybrid war against European countries that support Ukraine.
During a closed-door meeting, also attended by heads of French secret services, Macron presented political representatives with documents, maps and scenarios on possible threats to France.
According to "La Repubblica", French authorities are particularly concerned about the possibility of sabotage, drone attacks and cyber operations that could cause major consequences without necessarily being conventional military attacks.
A French intelligence source, quoted by the newspaper, said it would be "irresponsible" for France not to prepare for what is already happening in neighboring countries.
According to the authorities' analysis, drones could be used to disrupt traffic at airports, disrupt logistics chains, approach strategic industrial facilities, or force the closure of important infrastructure.
The French government has increased its level of vigilance and is drafting a special plan to protect critical infrastructure and defense industry facilities from drones and cyberattacks.
At the same time, Paris is considering the possibility of private operators of some vital infrastructures being equipped, under strict control, with means to neutralize drones.
Another concern for French authorities is related to cyber intrusions and influence campaigns. According to French intelligence, Russia could use networks of accounts and artificial amplification systems to create the perception of a spontaneous reaction from public opinion.
The goal, according to this assessment, would not necessarily be to support a particular candidate, but to incite confusion, deepen divisions, and weaken trust in the democratic process.
Macron has stated that the threat "exists and is real," while warning that France must also be prepared for the possibility of a physical attack on its territory.
