The "forbidden planet" is discovered 280 light years away from Earth

Astronomers have discovered an extremely large planet orbiting a dwarf star 280 light-years from Earth that is four times the size of the solar system's gas giant. This "forbidden" configuration of a massive planet orbiting a relatively small star could challenge theories of how gas giant planets form.

Scientists said the planet is the size of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. In the latest study published in The Astronomical Journal, the researchers named it "TOI 5205b", describing it as a forbidden planet due to its size.

According to them, the exoplanet orbits a red dwarf star called TOI-5205, which is about 40% the size and mass of our sun, and about 3,127 degrees Celsius in temperature, compared to the sun's blazing average of 5,527 degrees Celsius.

Astronomers have discovered in recent years that "M dwarf stars" are more likely to have planets orbiting them, but they didn't expect such small stars to host giant planets.

Current models of planet formation suggest that giving birth to a gas giant requires material equal to 10 times the mass of Earth. This first forms a rocky core and this core continues to collect gas to form the disk to grow into a giant planet.

Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope could help determine the composition of TOI-5205 b's atmosphere and shed light on the processes that gave birth to this "forbidden" planet.
