Until now, WhatsApp connected users using their phone number or a QR code that users could scan to connect and send messages to each other. However, WhatsApp is working on another option that would increase the security of users, but also make it easier to find and connect with them.
While the WAbetaInfo portal, which regularly reports on new and upcoming options in WhatsApp, is working on developing usernames that users would use instead of phone numbers.
More precisely, according to currently available data, while exchanging messages, users will not be able to see each other's phone numbers.
Once users choose their unique username, they will be able to share it with other users without revealing other personal information. While it is not clear when this option may become available to users, it is known that once a username is chosen, it will not be permanent, but users can change it at any time.
In addition, WhatsApp is developing the ability to search for users by name, which should make it easier to find users.
At the moment, this option is in development for the web and Android versions of the app, but will be available for iOS users at some point. What is not known is when this option could be officially included in the application, but judging by previous announcements, it could happen in a few weeks or months.
