It may sound like the script of an action movie but the use of animals for military purposes has a long history and is much more common than one might think.

In fact it is true, according to satellite images, the Russian military appears to be using trained dolphins to defend its naval base in the Black Sea.

Images released by US satellite company Maxar have captured two structures built in the port of Sevastopol on the southern tip of Crimea.

Russia is said to have started training marine animals for military purposes in the 1960s.

During the Cold War, both the US and the Soviet Union developed military programs for dolphins and sea lions.

Dolphins can communicate with each other through sounds or some high frequency whistling.

At the same time they can sense the presence of objects and determine the distance from them through a skill known as eco-location.

This capability allows dolphins to send high-frequency sound waves which collide with objects and turn ricochets revealing their location and distance from dolphins.

Trained dolphins use this natural sense to detect the presence of various objects that could be potential threats, such as underwater mines or enemy-side divers.

Two of them, named Makai and Tacoma, were trained to clear the path to be followed by humanitarian ships.

They identified the presence of mines and placed markers easily identifiable by ships that would pass over these dangerous waters.

However, animal rights organizations such as PETA have called against these practices, calling them abusive.

In one of their statements, they said, "War is a human enterprise, and while people and political parties can decide if it is necessary, animals can not."
