How Stores Use Psychology to Influence Your Purchases
A consumer in dilemma

You may think that every time you buy only what you need, and when you need it. But if you are buying different foods, clothes or accessories, retailers are using the power of psychological persuasion to influence your decisions.

And if you reflect a little, you will surely remember that in many cases you entered a store only to see that the way the products were placed had changed. Maybe the toilet paper was no longer where you expected it to be, or you had a hard time finding a bottle of tomato sauce.

But why do stores like to constantly relocate everything? The answer is simple: Changing the location of items in a store means that we, the customers, are more exposed to different items while wandering around looking for the things we need or want.

Often this trick can significantly increase unplanned expenses, as we add extra items to our baskets - often impulsively - as we spend more time in the store. In fact, studies suggest that up to 50 percent of all food items are sold because of impulsivity, and over 87 percent of shoppers make impulsive purchases.

While it is complex and influenced by many factors, such as the need for awakening and lack of self-control, it is known that external suggestions on purchases - offers, discounts and promotional shows in stores, for example "buy one and get one for free" - play a key role.

An attractive offer, can lead to a rush towards achieving a temporary satisfaction, and this makes it more difficult to make a rational decision. We get excited by the perceived value of "saving" if we buy the item right in this store and now, and ignore other considerations, such as whether we really need it.

On the flip side of the coin, purchases can help restore a person's sense of control. When we feel unhappy or anxious, we tend to think that everything is out of our control.

But since shopping allows us to make choices - which store to go to or if we like an item - it can bring a sense of personal control and reduce anxiety. So it might be a more meaningful activity than many people think.

While retailers may not be inclined to reduce the amount of purchases we make, they can help by having a more positive impact on our purchasing decisions. / The Conversation - Bota.al
