Scientists can predict how many years of life you have left by the way you walk

Scientists have concluded that the way you walk may predict your death. A new study has shown that measurements taken with hand motion sensors can be used to predict mortality risk up to five years later, according to foreign media.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Digital Health, was conducted using data from 100,000 Britons. They followed the participants for a total of 14 years, while researchers at the University of Illinois tracked each user's acceleration and distance traveled in six-minute chunks.

They chose this duration to mimic the 6-minute walk test: a measurement of heart and lung function typically taken during a medical visit, where participants walk at a normal pace for 6 minutes and the total distance is compared to age-matched norms. .

Death predictions made by the researchers' model were correct 72 percent of the time after one year and 73 percent after five years — a similar rate of accuracy found in a study published last year that analyzed the same data set , but used hours instead of minutes of data.

According to study author Bruce Schatz, this study is a more promising demonstration of passive monitoring technology like phone and wrist sensors, as his team's model requires less data and offers a greater degree of privacy to users.
