The hidden risk of heart attack, AI identifies problems invisible to the human

Technology that identifies people at risk of a heart attack in the next 10 years has brought about a major turning point in the field of medicine. The artificial intelligence (AI) model detects inflammation in the heart that doesn't show up on CT scans, which involve a combination of X-rays and computer technology.

A pilot project, supported by the NHS (National Health Service in England), is running in five hospital trusts. A decision on its use within the health system is expected within months.

The developer of this technology said it was already working to prevent strokes and diabetes. "This technology is transformative because for the first time we can detect biological processes that are invisible to the human eye that precede the development of narrowing and blockages within the heart," said the company's spokesperson.

As part of the pilot, patients suffering from chest pain who are referred for a routine CT scan take their scan to be analyzed by the Artificial Intelligence platform. An algorithm, which detects coronary inflammation, is then evaluated by trained operators to verify accuracy. Research has shown that increased inflammation is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and fatal heart attacks.

The British Heart Foundation estimates that around 7.6 million people live with heart disease in the UK and the annual cost to the health system is £7.4 billion, according to government figures. Around 350,000 patients are referred for a cardiac scan each year in England. The study of 40,000 patients found that 80% returned to primary care without a defined prevention or treatment plan.
