Dogs have always been man's best friend. It will not be an exaggeration to say that they walk beside us both in sickness and in health.

Medical evidence suggests that dogs can smell cancer in us. Dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell. Studies and some cases have shown that this animal can detect many types of cancer in the body.

Like many other diseases, cancers leave specific traces, or scent marks, on a person's body and bodily secretions. Studies have shown that dogs have a strong sense of smell and have been found to sniff out disease. Research has shown that with some training, dogs can help detect these odors of cancer and alert people to the presence of the disease.

Lauren Gauthier's dog sniffed her nose repeatedly

In 2018, a woman named Lauren Gauthier shared with the media how her dog Victoria discovered her skin cancer and saved her life. Gauthier told how the little dog kept sniffing the little red bump he had created on his nose. Gauthier went to her dermatologist. After a biopsy, she was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

The patient's dog kept licking his ear

This case study goes back to 2013 when a 75-year-old Caucasian man's dog was reportedly licking a wound behind his ear. The patient had a history of significant sun exposure and had suffered from eczema in adolescence. The doctor ran diagnostic tests and confirmed malignant melanoma.

Studies over the past few decades have shown that trained dogs can identify the urine of bladder cancer patients almost three times more often than expected. They even detect lung cancer in breath samples with high accuracy. There are also studies that showed that trained dogs can also detect ovarian cancer from blood samples and prostate cancer from sniffing a person's urine. In the cases mentioned above, these pets were not trained to detect cancer and alerted the owner more naturally.

It can detect cancer with 97% accuracy

A study presented at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology during the 2019 Experimental Biology meeting showed that dogs can use their highly evolved sense of smell to pick out blood samples from people with cancer with almost 97% accuracy.

Man's best friend can save a man from prostate cancer

A team of urologists and other experts at John Hopkins Hospital have studied a dog's extremely sensitive sense of smell as a diagnostic tool for prostate cancer. The researchers had two dogs sniff urine samples from men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and from men without cancer. The results showed that the two dogs identified five of the seven urine samples from the men with cancer with an accuracy rate of 71.4 percent. Some studies have also shown that in a pool of urine samples, dogs can distinguish aggressive prostate cancer from its intermediate form.

Dogs can have olfactory receptors 10,000 times more precise than human beings. This makes them very sensitive to smells that we cannot perceive. If your pet begins to pay attention to a part of the body, it may be a sign that you need to go to the doctor for a checkup.
