Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrates his 70th birthday today.
The jubilee comes at a time when the increasingly authoritarian leader faces some of the most daunting challenges of his two decades in power.

Although polls in Russia are very limited and should be interpreted with caution, the Levada Center has recorded Putin's approval rating at over 80 percent for most of 2022. In August, the figure was 83 percent. But in September, Putin's approval rating fell to 77 percent.

This birthday comes after more than 200 days have passed since the start of the war in Ukraine, where tens of thousands of people have been killed.
In past years, Putin has celebrated by taking trips, hiking in Siberia with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu or playing in a hockey game. It seems that the head of the Kremlin will spend this birthday at work, as today he is expected to have a meeting in Saint Petersburg with the heads of states of the political bloc led by Moscow.
Putin's birthday will be celebrated in the North Caucasian Republic of Chechnya. Leader Ramzan Kadyrov has promised major events, such as horse racing, the opening ceremony for a judo training center with Putin, a known fan of martial arts.
