Why should Earth be called the Water planet? Some curiosities about the oceans
oceans

Because the oceans cover 71% of the surface of our planet and make up to 95% of the spaces that are suitable for living.

The big waves, the icy calm or the cold ice that we see on the surface of the oceans hide the incredible diversity of the underwater world - from corals that are illuminated by sunlight to dark and deep grooves, from forests of huge algae to groups of shells that congregate around hydrothermal vents, from tidal flats to open oceans…

Rich biodiversity

Life began in the oceans and continues to develop in these diverse habitats. With more than 100 million species – from the largest animal to ever live on Earth, the blue whale to the smallest bacteria – marine biodiversity surpasses that of land. And new species are discovered every time.

The main role for life on earth…

The oceans also have a great influence on all who love the land. The oceans produce 70% of our oxygen, absorb heat and redistribute that heat to the planet, and dominate all of the world's climate systems.

...and have shaped human history

Oceans have shaped human history, culture and life – and continue to do so. We feed off their resources, sunbathe on their beaches, swim in their waves, bask in their beauty, transport our goods and raw materials, and mine their minerals and their oil. Rare are the people who are not influenced by the oceans, even if they have never had the opportunity to see it.

The coast – one of the richest biological areas on Earth

Only 10% of the ocean is in the coastal part. Despite this, the coast is home to 90% of marine species. For example, of the 13,200 known species of fish, 80% of them are coastal.

The coastal zone has the most nutrients from the entire marine space. Thanks to the sunlight that penetrates the shallow waters, plants can grow in the sea, and the bottom of the sea is home to many organisms. As a result, a large number of highly productive and complex coastal ecosystems have developed.
