The color of the ocean has changed significantly over the past 20 years, and human-caused climate change is likely to blame, according to a new study published in the journal Nature.

The study, which analyzed decades of satellite data, found that 56% of the global ocean – an area larger than the total land surface – experienced color change between 2002 and 2022. While the researchers did not identify an overall pattern, regions of the ocean tropical areas near the Equator appear to have become steadily greener over time.

Most of the ocean appears blue to the human eye, but the true color may contain a mixture, from blue to green and even red, which a satellite-based sensor can detect.
