The number 1 country for 2026 is Greece, a warm country blessed with thousands of picturesque islands and a lifestyle that, according to International Living, is perfect for a new beginning.

“Greece’s ranking in the top spot marks a significant shift in the European retirement scene,” says Jennifer Stevens, editor-in-chief of International Living. “For years, Portugal and Spain topped the charts, but changes in visa policies and rising costs have prompted retirees to seek more affordable alternatives. Greece offers just that: beauty, hospitality, and easy residency options.”

What makes Greece so attractive?

One of the main reasons is the Golden Visa program, which allows foreigners to obtain a residence permit if they invest a minimum of 250,000 euros in real estate. In addition, the country is highly regarded for: the Mediterranean climate, the quality healthcare system, the relatively low cost of living, the numerous housing options in the city, the hospitality of the community towards foreigners.
