The Moon will briefly cover the entire disk of the Sun today along a narrow strip in Western Europe.

This will be the first total solar eclipse visible in Europe since 1999, and will coincide with the peak visibility of the Perseid meteor shower.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent angular diameter - the size at which the Moon appears in the sky - is almost the same as that of the Sun and the Moon's disk completely covers the Sun's disk.

For this to happen, the Moon must be near perigee, the closest point in its orbit to Earth.

The best places to view the eclipse will be western Iceland and northern Spain.

In Spain, the eclipse path will cross a larger part of the territory, from Galicia in the northwest to the Balearic Islands in the southeast.

The eclipse will also affect important cities such as Bilbao, Burgos, Palma, Valencia and Zaragoza, offering more opportunities to find a suitable viewing point.

The belt of totality, the narrow area of ??Earth where the Moon will completely block the Sun, will also include a small part of Portugal, near the northeastern border with Spain, as well as some areas of Russia and Greenland, although these are much less populated.

Where will it only be partially visible?

A partial solar eclipse will be visible in some areas of the northern United States and eastern Canada.

The same thing will happen in some areas of the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Even in Italy, the eclipse will only be partial, at sunset, when the Sun will be very close to the western horizon.

However, the sky will not be completely darkened and no solar corona will be visible, because the eclipse will occur around 7:30 PM, when the Sun is already very close to sunset.

Experts advise that, a few days in advance, a test be made to see the Sun at sunset, as a hill, mountain, or relief in the west-northwest direction, from where the Sun sets, can completely hide it.
