The newest reality show "Squid Game: Challenge" finally has an air date. Inspired by the original Squid Game series, the new show from Netflix will feature 456 real players competing through a series of games similar to or inspired by the record-breaking series. Fear not – the characters won't actually die.
In June 2022, the streaming platform announced the "biggest competition ever for a reality show," at the Banff World Media Festival. Like the series, the competition will host 456 contestants – the largest cast in a TV series to date – battling it out in a series of fascinating games to win an incredible prize.
"The most infamous game in the world becomes a reality", it says, among other things, in the promotional video of the reality show. The platform released a trailer on September 22, revealing the premiere date, but also a full trailer on October 23. "This game should be played with strategy", someone can be heard saying in the clip. While another adds: "I will be your best friend, but I will absolutely pass you by."
The 10-episode series will be "full of suspense and obstacles," and will even include an IRL (but not deadly) Red Light, Green Light doll.
The original announcement of "Squid Game: The Challenge" came just days after Netflix announced a second season of "Squid Game": "We are grateful for this support as we bring the fictional world to reality with a massive competition and social experiment." ",- said Brandon Riegg from Netflix. "Fans of the dramatic series will be involved in a fascinating and unpredictable journey."
