Lip biting

Many people may have the habit of biting their lips, most have it as a reflex that they do involuntarily, but there are also cases when biting the lips can be a signal of some health problem.

Some of the diseases that lip biting can "warn" are:

Arthritis in the jaw

When arthritis affects the jaw you may have changes in shape, inflammation, problems with opening and closing the mouth normally. If you happen to feel pain when you move your jaw as well as a headache or toothache, it is very likely that you suffer from arthritis of the jaw.

Teeth grinding/ Bruxism

Grinding the teeth can also affect the deformity of the jaw and lead to involuntary biting of the lips. People who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) often unconsciously clench their jaw at night while sleeping. Another symptom of this disease can be a headache.

Malocclusion (Improper Bite)

Malocclusion or "bad bite" is one of the most common dental problems. When you have a malocclusion, your upper teeth don't line up with your lower teeth when you close your mouth. Doctors explain that if the jaw is not positioned correctly, the person often bites the lip.

Anxiety or depression

People who bite their lips often suffer from anxiety or depression.
