An extremely rare Mercedes has broken the world record by becoming the most expensive car ever sold at any auction, according to Sotheby's.
The 1955 and second-of-its-kind Mercedes Coupé 300 SLR Uhlenhaut sold for $ 135 million at a private auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany on May 5.

That figure is about three times higher than the previous record held by a 1962 Ferrari, which sold 45 million from Sotheby's auction house.
The car owned by Mercedes Benz was bought by a private collector, while the proceeds from the sale will be used to create a scholarship fund for young people to deepen their studies in environmental sciences and decarbonization.
The buyer has agreed to allow the rare car to be displayed during special ceremonies, while the other model will remain the property of Mercedes Benz, on display at the Stuttgart Museum.
According to Sotheby's, the 300 SLR model, which is known for its unusual shapes and doors that resemble butterfly wings, was built by engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut.
Uhlenhaut was inspired by the 'Mercedes-Benz W196' racing car which was twice declared Formula 1 champion, in 1954 and 1955.
