Unfortunately, tourists are often the target of pickpockets. A new ranking of pickpockets has identified the worst places for crime in Europe.

Pickpockets often target tourists, as they may be less aware of their surroundings, or have important documents.

A new pickpocket index from Quotezone.co.uk has identified the places where tourists are most at risk of being robbed.

Ranking:

1- Italy

2- France

3- The Netherlands

4- Germany

5- Greece

6- Spain

7- Portugal

8- Turkey

9- Ireland

10- Poland

The team looked at the number of times tourists mentioned pickpockets in ratings of each country's top attractions.

Although Barcelona is often thought of as a hotspot for pickpockets, Spain did not make the top 5.

Italy took first place and some of the country's main tourist attractions were magnets for thieves.

Online reviews of Rome's Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon all had comments from tourists mentioning having items stolen from them.

A study by money.co.uk found 2,206 comments mentioning pickpockets at the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The iconic fountain is one of Rome's most visited attractions and is usually packed with tourists taking pictures.

Vacationers should beware of common scams, which can be used as distraction techniques. Thieves working in pairs may use one decoy to attract the tourist's attention while another steals them. / Express
