If your doctor has advised you to work to lower your blood pressure or improve your cardiovascular health, you may not know where to start. It is not easy to get rid of habits that we have practiced for years without thinking. The encouraging news is that 90 percent of heart disease can be prevented with a healthy diet and lifestyle.
"It's more effective than trying to suddenly change the whole menu or lifestyle. There is one change that can make a big difference and positively affect heart health, and we always recommend it to people first. Cook more,” said cardiologist Kaustubh Dabhadkar.
The doctor claims that cooking has such an impact because it reduces the amount of processed food that we usually eat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 70 percent of sodium consumed comes from processed foods or meals eaten outside the home.
This is essential because a high sodium diet is directly linked to high blood pressure and poor cardiovascular health.
When you cook for yourself, you can control all the ingredients used, not only salt, but also refined carbohydrates, sugar and saturated fat.
"A diet high in calories, especially saturated fat, trans fat and refined carbohydrates, increases the level of bad fats in the body and the level of insulin. This also increases the deposition of cholesterol in the arteries, which leads to the hardening of the arteries and the formation of plaques in them", the doctor explained to Kosovapress.
According to him, the worst foods for heart health are potato chips, ice cream and sugary drinks.
When cooking meals at home, focus on foods that are a good source of fiber and unsaturated fat and that have a low glycemic index. Exercising, reducing stress, getting enough sleep and socializing are good for heart health.
