Addiction to social media not only damages productivity but is also detrimental to the neck: standing next to a mobile phone can put a 27-kilogram load on the cervical spine, the weight of a 7-8 year old child, writes the Italian science journal, Focus.

This study was performed years ago by surgeon Kenneth Hansraj, at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine Hospital.

On average, we read newspapers, spend 2 to 4 hours a day with our heads down on smartphones, to write, read or play. In a year 700-1400 hours of cervical stress are done, which becomes 5000 in the case of particularly at-risk subjects, who spend a lot of time on their cell phones or leaning over books.

Over time, this habit dictates a forward bent posture, which can end up damaging the spine.

The weight placed on the neck depends on the assumed inclination of the head. An angle of 15 degrees is equal to 12 kilograms of pain, 30 degrees 18 kg, 45 degrees 22 kg and 60 degrees 27 kg.

Hansraj acknowledges that the use of new technologies cannot be avoided. But spinal cord injury can be prevented by maintaining an accurate head position, with the ears in line with the shoulders. There are also simple exercises to relieve pain and relax the neck.
