Sometime towards the end of 2022, the world will reach a population of eight billion, thus marking a historic moment for humanity.
In just 48 years, the world's population has doubled, from four billion to eight billion. Of course, people are not evenly distributed across the planet and, therefore, countries have different shapes and sizes.
Thus, the maps and tables in this article aim to provide a clearer picture of how the eight billion people are distributed around the world.
Below you can find data on the population of each country, for the month of September 2022:

Population of Africa by country

As of now, in 2022, the total population of Africa is 1.4 billion people. Africa is home to most of the countries with the fastest growing population rates and, by 2050, the continent's population is expected to grow to 2.5 billion.
Nigeria is the country with the largest population and economy in Africa. Based on current growth rates, Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, could be the world's largest megacity by the end of this century.
By far, Africa has the lowest median age of any other continent.
Population of Asia by country

With 4.7 billion people in 2022, Asia is by far the most populous region in the world.
This continent is dominated by two massive population centers, China and India. In 2023, a big change will happen, as India's population will surpass that of China, becoming the most populous country in the world.
China has held the top spot for centuries, but the difference in population growth rates between the two countries made it just a matter of time before this milestone was reached.
Asia is a region of great contrasts when it comes to population growth. On the one hand are countries like Singapore and Japan, whose populations are actually declining. On the other hand are the countries of the Middle East, such as Oman and Qatar, which have large population growth rates of 4-5%.
Vietnam is poised to become the 15th most populous country, surpassing the 100 million mark.
Population of Europe by country

Europe's population in 2022 is 750 million, more than twice the size of the United States.
A century ago, the population of Europe constituted approximately 30% of the total population of the world. Today, this figure is less than 10%. This is partly due to population growth in other regions of the world.
However, the most important factor that has influenced this change is that the population of Europe is decreasing in many countries, especially in Eastern European countries.
Most of the countries with the slowest population growth rates are located in the Balkans and the countries of the former Soviet Bloc.
Russia remains the largest country in Europe in terms of population. Although the surface of this country lies in a large part in Asia, three quarters of the inhabitants of Russia live in the European part of the country.
Germany is the second largest country in Europe, followed by the United Kingdom, France and Italy.
Ukraine is the seventh largest population center in Europe, but it remains to be seen how the current conflict with Russia will affect the country's long-term population prospects.
Population of North America by country

The population of North America is 602 million people in 2022.
The continent is dominated by the United States, which accounts for more than half of the total population. America's population continues to grow at modest rates (by global standards), but perhaps it's worth noting the internal migration patterns taking place there.
States like Texas and Florida are expecting a higher influx of people from other states.
Canada has one of the highest rates of population growth compared to major developed economies, largely thanks to international immigration.
Mexico is currently the 10th most populous country in the world, but it is likely to drop out of the top 10 most populous country list as African countries have very high rates of population growth.
Population of South America by country

The population of South America in 2022 is 439 million inhabitants. Brazil accounts for almost half of this figure.
During this decade, Colombia's capital, Bogotá, will become the region's fifth megacity (megacities are defined as all cities with a population of 10 million or more).
São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Lima are the current megacities of South America.
Population of Oceania by country

The population of the Oceania region is 44 million people, a figure slightly higher than the population of California.
Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea make up the majority of the population of this region.
It remains interesting to note that many of the states with the smallest population can also be found in this region.
When will the Earth's population reach 9 billion?
The world's population will hit another milestone, reaching nine billion sometime in the 2030s.
