Yesterday was a special day for the Albanian community in New York. In the Bronx, the Governor of the State of New York (which is one of the most important and richest states in the country), Kathy Hochu, arrived to hold a very cordial meeting with the Albanians there. She started her speech speaking Albanian, when she addressed the audience saying: "Mirdita!" This caused excitement among the meeting participants who cheered and applauded.
After that, the reception given to the governor was special and equally cordial even though her visit was announced only 48 hours before her arrival. At the head of this important organization and meeting for our community there was Mark Gjonaj, former City Councilor who has been and continues to be one of the biggest promoters of the Albanian community in New York as well as a strong lobbyist that the attention towards the Albanians to increase. This was a meeting of great importance for the state's attention to the Albanian community, as the governor herself emphasized when she said that "the number one priority is to keep everyone safe and protect businesses from robbery. On the other hand, she promised that she will "protect health, safety, families, businesses every day."
The fact that the Governor wants to meet the Albanian-American community clearly shows that this community is making a difference and is being appreciated for its contributions in New York.
The Eagle in the Bronx
As can be seen from the photos from yesterday's meeting, the visit was very friendly and cordial. The governor emphasized that "This community is better, more alive and more fascinating because of your presence today and your willingness to build businesses and help us become a better New York through your work." After exchanging mutual appreciation, the Governor did not hesitate to make the national symbol, the eagle, together with Mark.
The canon of Lekë Dukagjin
The surprises did not end there. After making the Eagle, the governor also received a special gift from Gjonaj and it was the Canon of Lekë Dukagjini, where all the norms of Albanian customary law are written. From today, the Governor will have a piece of Albanian history in her home, a gift from the New York community.
Appreciation for Mark
The appreciation for Mark Gjonaj, the former councilor of New York, who is an important factor on the side of the Albanian community there, could not be missing either. The governor has spoken with superlatives about Gjonaj, stressing that "Mark is an extraordinary man who has always served and placed the Albanian community in his heart"!
Promise kept
Organizer Gjonaj in his speech, while thanking Governor Kathy Hochu for the visit to the Albanian community there, proudly said that "the Albanian community here are true New Yorkers who really appreciate the opportunity they have been given."
On the other hand, Gjonaj discovered a long-standing conversation with the Governor when they worked together, where she had promised him a visit to get to know the Albanian-American community better. "When I worked with Governor Kathy Hochul, she made me a promise to get to know the Albanian-American community better, so we organized this meeting today because she would know our needs, our concerns and our problems." And the Governor kept this promise yesterday!/Lexo.al
