A week after they were found unconscious in their apartment, police have revealed the cause of the mysterious deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

According to foreign media, police confirmed that 95-year-old Hackman died of heart disease around February 18, a few days after Betsy, 65, succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in their bathroom around February 11.

The legendary actor may have been alone for seven days in his large villa, without his partner, who had been by his side for three decades, to feed and care for him. Left alone and with his wife's body decomposing in their bathroom, Hackman, whose health condition was very serious, was left without food.

The autopsy showed that his stomach was empty at the time of death.

Hackman was found dead with his cane and glasses by his side in a room near the kitchen after an apparent fall. The last recorded activity of his pacemaker was on February 18.

The isolated couple's dogs have also been left alone, one of which was found dead.

The bodies of the actor and his partner were found last Wednesday, in different rooms of their luxury residence in Santa Fe.

The state's chief medical examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell, said autopsies performed confirmed that Gene Hackman died of heart problems and Betsy Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is transmitted to humans by rats.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is caused by infection with viruses of the genus Hantavirus. These viruses are transmitted primarily through contact with the secretions or feces of rodents that carry the virus.

The 95-year-old actor had advanced heart disease, as well as suffering from Alzheimer's.

The cause of death of the dog found dead in the house next to Betsy Arakawa has not yet been determined, according to the doctor, who clarified that dogs are not infected with hantavirus.
