France has destroyed and recreated 27 million coins after failing to ask the EU for design approval and they told it it is not within the norm.

The Monnaie de Paris, the country's money maker, produced 10, 20 and 50 cents in November, but belatedly realized that the way the stars of the EU flag were placed on the coins did not comply with European Commission requirements.

Under European law, countries can change national euro designs every 15 years, but it needs the green light from the Commission and eurozone governments.

France had informally contacted the Commission before the formal request, but production had started without waiting for the EU's "ok". The EC then told him that the new design does not comply with the rules.

Now a blame game has started between Monnaie and the government. The Ministry of Economy there said that Monnaie is an independent public company and not part of the administration. This means that the entire cost of reproduction would be borne by itself and not the budget with citizens' taxes.

The design of the new coins is now secret and won't be made public until spring./Politico.eu
