Drinking a cup of coffee to relieve a headache is an old remedy and one of the many solutions that often proves to be effective.

Science has concluded that there is a correlation between coffee and migraines as well as the reason why this happens.

Coffee and headaches

According to some scientists, including neurologist Vincenzo Tullo, of the "Humanitas Mater Domini" headache clinic, caffeine helps alleviate migraine pain because it has a vasoconstrictive power.

Migraine, in fact, is due to the enlargement of certain blood vessels.

By expanding, they become inflamed and change the regular pulses, causing an imbalance in the supply of oxygen to the brain and causing pain that can be of varying intensity.

Coffee is particularly effective against occasional headaches thanks to its vasoconstrictive action, precisely because it helps narrow the arteries of the skull.

However, coffee or other caffeinated drinks (including energy drinks) are not always allies against headaches, on the contrary, they can worsen the situation.

Can coffee cause headaches?

Many people have the opposite effect, that is, they experience headaches after drinking coffee.

Why does this happen?

Because obviously these are substances in which caffeine increases the concentration of free fatty acids in the plasma and their conversion to prostaglandins can cause vasodilation which then leads to headaches.

If you realize that you are among those who are at risk of getting a headache after drinking it, then choose it without caffeine.

Headache if you give up coffee

Another situation in which coffee can indirectly cause headaches is if you stop using coffee when you consume it every day.

In fact, those who are used to drinking coffee every day, if they stop it suddenly, can experience headaches.

Withholding caffeine causes headaches in about half of people, and for about a third of migraine sufferers there is a close connection between taking or stopping caffeine and migraine attacks.

Therefore, it is necessary to gradually stop or continue taking caffeine with other drinks that contain it, among which, let's remember, is tea.
