A biologist has warned that long nails as cardi B and Billie Eilish or the Kardashian sisters have made a trend, could harbor dozens of species of bacteria and fungi.

Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan from the American University in Washington DC, said that nails "increase the probability of transmission of microorganisms, which makes decontamination more difficult."

"Studies have found 32 different bacteria and 28 different fungi under the nails," Kaplan said. "The longer the nail, the more surface area there is for microorganisms to stick."

Bacteria and fungi are common on nails, as people get them by touching various objects.

These common bacteria are "almost always harmless, but when infections occur they can cause swelling, pain and thickening of the nail."

Studies have found antibiotic-resistant Steph aureus, a common cause of skin infections, located under longer nails. The doctor claimed that long artificial, natural, gel and acrylic nails pose a risk of collecting extra bacteria and fungi.

"You can transmit nail bacteria to your system by scratching, biting your nails, touching your nose and sucking your fingers." Although, Kaplan said the worst case scenario would be to leave your nails disfigured if bacteria or fungus were to cause an infection.

Dr. Kaplan pointed out that this is why most health care workers are required to keep their nails short "because of the risk of transmitting disease". Two nurses at an Oklahoma City hospital may have contributed to the deaths of 16 babies in 1997 and 1998 due to bacteria found under their long fingernails, The New York Times reported.
