Theft of car parts has recently taken on great proportions, especially of expensive parts that are easily removed and capture high prices on the black market.
The problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic in the global car industry are significant, as in recent years there has been a shortage of many components needed for vehicle construction.
The problem also concerns spare parts which are constantly being valued, as a result of which illegal trading practices flourish. The lack of spare parts has also led to an increase in car thefts, with robbers focused on removing valuables, which they then sell on the black market.
In particular, one of the thieves' favorite parts are the headlights of Porsche, Audi, VW, Land Rover and Mercedes models, as well as the car mirrors of Mercedes and BMW.
It is about thefts that are sold at high prices on the black market, as the cost of spare parts for models of German premium companies and those of Land Rover is higher compared to other automakers.
Victims are also Japanese models, in which the windshield wipers are removed, as well as Skoda cars, especially Octavia, whose mirrors are removed.
Thieves seem to have a lot of love for Volvo, focusing on the radiator grille. The most vulnerable models of the Swedish company are mainly the first generation XC90, followed by the S60, S80, XC60 and XC70.
It is characteristic that in most cases the removal of the above components does not require any special equipment, with screws using screwdrivers, a wrench or a metal ruler. An example is Land Rover Discovery lights that are fixed with screws and therefore a simple screwdriver is enough to remove them.
According to available data, in Germany, most cases of catalyst theft have occurred in the Opel Astra, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Prius. Removing a catalyst is an easy task for robbers as no special equipment is required and stealing them is not a time consuming process.
