If you were to hashtag Zante or Zakynthos on social media, almost half of the photos of this Greek island show a sandy bay and the old wreck of a shipwreck years ago.

Navagio Beach and its 43-year-old ruins is one of the island's most visited and photographed attractions, and tour companies offer dedicated tours.

However, recent Instagram posts show just how much the ship's condition has deteriorated over the past decade. Now the plight of the ship has drawn the attention of authorities amid fears it could disappear entirely – along with a huge chunk of the island's tourism revenue.

Navagio Beach, often called Ship Beach, is famous for the wreck of the MV Panagiotis, a ship that sank in 1980.

Her legendary image is reinforced by rumors that the ship was smuggling and that the crew abandoned her during a heavy storm to escape the pursuing navy.

Surrounded by white sand and limestone cliffs, the bay is one of the most visited and photographed places on the island.

In 2018, the beach was briefly closed and bathing and boat mooring prohibited after part of the cliff above collapsed.

In September 2022, another landslide occurred, triggered by a magnitude 5.4 earthquake between Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Access to the beach was again limited and remained so, except for boats approaching from the water.

The delicate rocks surrounding the bay are not the only danger to the ship. According to the local press, a recent bout of bad weather caused parts of the pier to break off. Side-by-side photos show how the ruins have deteriorated over the years.
