Is the Coca-Cola recipe really a secret?

It was May 8, 1886, a hot and humid evening, when pharmacist John Stith Pemberton at his home in Atlanta (USA), thanks to the use of a bronze cauldron, developed the Coca-Cola recipe.

What was the purpose of Dr. Pemberton? The syrup, based on plant extracts and cola nuts (seeds of an African tree), was supposed to be used to treat headaches.

From medicine to the famous drink

Some time later, the Atlanta pharmacist noticed that, by adding soda, his medicine became a pleasant and quenching thirst drink. Thus was born the most famous drink in the world, the secret formula of which is carefully preserved even today in a safe of a bank in Atlanta.

The first version of Coca-Cola also contained a small amount of the narcotic substance from the coca plant (cocaine), but in 1903 it was completely removed thanks to a procedure similar to that used to decaffeinate coffee.

Coca-Cola was born as a remedy for headaches.

There has always been a mysterious atmosphere to the content of the popular drink, but recently the American journalist "Ida Grass" claims to be in possession of the original recipe book signed by John Pemberton, the inventor of the recipe.

Some of the ingredients are: head juice, citric acid, caffeine, sugar, water, a liter of lime juice, vanilla and just enough caramel to give color. Then add alcohol and various flavors of orange, lemon, nutmeg, coriander, cinnamon and neroli oil.
