The winner of the international competition for the "Tirana Fountaine Tower" has been announced.
The winner was announced as the company "Bjarge Ingels Group".
During a conference, its positive aspects were highlighted and why it was the choice among the five names that presented their proposals for development on the trail where Taiwan and Youth Park are located today.
Here's what the "Bjarge Ingels Group" project envisages
Danish studio BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group has proposed a three-dimensional building raised above ground level, with volumes that aim to free up as much of the park space as possible and keep it accessible to the public.
The concept is based on the idea of a "cloud", with living and working spaces raised above the ground. Beneath them are covered areas, shade and public spaces, also conceived as a new entrance to the Rinia Park in relation to the city.
The project envisions preserving the water and fountain as part of the area’s identity, but treats them in a new form. BIG proposes to raise the water in the structure, so that it returns to the park with the effect of a “summer rain”. According to the studio, this element also aims to influence the local microclimate and the use of public space during the hot months.
During the presentation, the studio described the Youth Park as a space where several networks intertwine — greenery, water and social activity — and the proposal is built on the idea that the building adds new functions without taking more space from the park. The studio also aims to create a new identifiable point in the city, not through height, but through the shape and way the building connects to the public space. The project’s surfaces are divided between residences, hotels and offices, while about 10% of the program is foreseen for a cultural component and functions open to the public.
While Prime Minister Edi Rama said during his speech that the project aims to transform one of the capital's historic spaces, adapting it to the needs and ambitions of Tirana.
He also emphasized that this is a private enterprise and that the project selection is being done through an international competition with the participation of renowned architects and professionals.
The Prime Minister stated that the process should bring about an impactful development for the capital and its future. The Head of Government emphasized that in Albania there is no construction without rules and that private projects have not been accompanied by the forced eviction of residents from their homes.
Rama also stated that the construction of the towers requires specialized expertise and that the competition aims to bring international architecture and experience to Albania.
