German elections / Merz declares victory: We must form a stable government as
Friedrich Merz

CDU/CSU leader Friedrich Merz has declared victory in the parliamentary elections in Germany, emphasizing that the main challenge now is forming a stable government.

"We have won the elections," he declared after the exit polls were released.

Merz acknowledged that the process of forming a government will not be easy, but stressed that it must happen as soon as possible.

"We must form it as soon as possible with a proper parliamentary majority, because the world is not waiting for us. Germany will be credible again," he said during his speech at the Adenauer Haus, the party headquarters.

The CDU leader called on other parties for dialogue, underlining that after a strong election campaign on economic issues and immigration, now is the time for talks.

"Now we need to talk to each other to create a government that can act," Merz added.

According to exit polls, the CDU/SCU is predicted to win with 29% of the vote. In second place is the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with 19.5% of the vote. They appear to have doubled their vote share, having only managed to get 10% of the vote in 2021.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Olaf Scholz's ruling SPD comes in third with 16% of the vote and the "Greens" in fourth place with 13.5% of the vote.

If these figures are confirmed, it is not clear whether Friedrich Merz of the CDU/CSU can form a coalition with just one other party, the Social Democrats. It could all depend on whether one of the other parties enters parliament or not. If he has to find a third party, it could take time.
