Migrant boat sinks off the coast of Panama, 8-year-old girl dies!

An 8-year-old Venezuelan girl has died, while twenty other people were rescued after a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Panama, the Panamanian border guard agency announced on Saturday.

A total of 19 migrants from Venezuela and Colombia were on the boat, including the 8-year-old, as well as two smugglers, according to a statement released by Panama's border guard service (SENAFRONT).

According to SENAFRONT, the boat sank off the coast of the coastal province of Gouna Yala, which is inhabited mainly by indigenous people, in the northeastern part of the country, " due to strong waves caused by bad weather ."

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) confirmed the death of the minor and called on Panamanian authorities to guarantee the safe repatriation of the migrants.

Since US President Trump took office on January 20, hundreds of immigrants from Latin American countries dreaming of a better life have been denied entry to the US.

As a result, they have taken the difficult path of return, moving in stages on foot, by bus, by boat, sometimes spending the night in reception centers.
