Scholz admits election defeat, congratulates Friedrich Merz
Olaf Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), says the election results are "bitter" for his party, calling them a "defeat".

Exit polls showed the SPD in third place, with 16-16.5% of the vote. Speaking to supporters in Berlin, Scholz said it was a moment "in which we have to admit that we have lost the election".

In the previous elections, he says, the party had a "better" result for which he was "responsible", adding that this result "is worse and I am responsible for that too".

Scholz meanwhile congratulated Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative Christian Democratic party, who is leading in the polls.
