According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian military has taken full control of the city of Sudzha in the Russian border region of Kursk.
Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky reported "the liberation of the city of Sudzha from the hands of the Russian army", Zelensky said on Thursday on the Telegram internet service.
Sudzha is strategically important for the Ukrainian army's offensive on Kursk, which has been ongoing since August 6. The small town of about 5500 people is home to the last Russian gas transfer station to reach Europe via Ukraine.
Syrsky said the military had created a military administration in Kursk.
"A military command was established to guarantee law and order and meet the most important needs of the population in the controlled areas," he said in a meeting with Zelensky.
In addition, the command in Kursk must take care of the military's logistical supply.
