Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine will face a deficit of missiles that it is using to fight Russia, due to the war in the Middle East.

In an interview with the BBC, the Ukrainian president said that Vladimir Putin wants a "long war" between the US, Israel and Iran because it would weaken Kiev, with American resources directed elsewhere.

Zelensky also claimed that US President Donald Trump is "not on either side" in the war between Russia and Ukraine and does not want to "annoy" Putin. He called on Trump and Keir Starmer to meet and find common ground, following the US president's repeated criticism of the British prime minister.

Now in its third week, the conflict in the Middle East has spilled over into the Persian Gulf, with Iran striking neighboring countries in retaliation for US and Israeli attacks. Zelensky said he had a “very bad feeling” about the conflict’s impact on the war in Ukraine, stressing that peace negotiations are “constantly being postponed. There is only one reason: the war in Iran.”

He added that the situation is serving Putin because it increases energy prices, which is a problem for Ukraine, and means there could be a "shortage" of missiles.

“For Putin, a long war in Iran is a plus,” he said. “In addition to energy prices, this means the depletion of American reserves and air defense manufacturers. So we have resource depletion.”

Zelensky said there will be "without a doubt" a shortage of Patriot missiles, which will be "a challenge", adding that the question now is "when will they exhaust all the reserves in the Middle East".

"America produces 60-65 missiles per month. Imagine, 65 missiles per month is about 700-800 missiles per year. And on the first day of the war in the Middle East, 803 missiles were used," Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president also spoke about his American counterpart's position on the war in Ukraine, saying that Trump wants to be a negotiator and not take sides in Ukraine's fight against the illegal Russian occupation. Zelensky said he thinks Trump "wants to end this war," but added that the American president and his advisers have chosen a strategy of close dialogue with Putin, "in order not to irritate him because Europe irritated him and Putin does not want to talk to Europe."

The war sparked by US and Israeli attacks on Iran has descended into a diplomatic standoff over Trump's criticism of NATO allies and Starmer's alleged lack of military action. Zelensky warned against division among Western leaders.

Speaking to the BBC, the Ukrainian president said that while he would not tell Trump what to do, the two should meet to improve relations.
