A 23-year-old young man in Bari, Italy, died a few days after being bitten by a spider.
The young man was bitten on July 13 by the so-called "violin spider" in a village where he was working cleaning for the company.
23-year-old Giuseppe Russo thought he was bitten on the leg by a mosquito and ignored it.
As the days passed, the bite site began to swell and there was severe pain.
Due to the deterioration of his health, the young man went to the hospital and was admitted first in Tricase, and then in Lece. The situation worsened last night and he was transferred to the Bari polyclinic.
In the early hours of the morning, he passed away from septic shock (caused by the presence of a bacterium) and multiple organ failure.
The "violin spider" is known as one of the most poisonous spiders and is present in Italy. This type of spider has a yellow-brown color and a violin-shaped spot on the back, from which it got its name. Because of the color it has, it is not very noticeable. It is usually not aggressive and tends to escape rather than bite. But if it feels threatened, it protects itself by biting.
A bite from this spider is generally painless and may not be noticed immediately. Symptoms appear 24-48 hours and include pain, burning, swelling and itching.
