Struck by lightning, the bitter death of the Italian confectionery billionaire
Alberto Balocco

Alberto Balocco, president and CEO of the confectionery industry, passed away today, August 26, after being struck by lightning in the mountains, in the Assietta area, in the Municipality of Pragelato in the province of Turin in Italy.

The news has shocked the Italian business world. 56-year-old Balocco was in the company of a friend from Luxembourg, on a bicycle tour.

Italian media reports that the emergency call was made by a motorist passing by Assietta, but air ambulance assistance proved futile.

The company was founded by his grandfather in 1927 and is still 100% family controlled.

The other victim is Davide Vigo, 55 years old, originally from Turin and living in Luxembourg.

Two months ago, on July 2nd, another heavy loss hit the Balocco family and confectionery company, the death of Alberto's father, Aldo, the inventor of the famous 'Mandorlato' panettone and the architect of the growth of the company started by his father in 1927 in Fossano (Cuneo), when he opened a small pastry shop.

Alberto Balocco led the company with 500 employees and a turnover of 200 million euros in 2022, together with his sister.
