Turkey has proposed building a 1.2 billion euro military fuel pipeline to help meet the energy needs of NATO allies in Eastern Europe, Bloomberg reported.

Following the alliance's push to expand its military pipeline network, Ankara is proposing the new pipeline to connect Turkey to Romania via Bulgaria, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Turkey's NATO proposal comes as the country prepares to host the alliance's summit in July.

According to the same sources, a fuel pipeline from Turkey to Romania could cost only a fifth of other alternative plans that have already been proposed, including through Greece or through Romania's western neighbors.

They also added that such routes would be more vulnerable, as they depend on maritime transport.

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East, including recent disruptions in energy supplies due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have prompted NATO to strengthen its fuel supply model, the sources said.

Thus, underlining the importance of a resilient supply chain at a reasonable cost for the eastern members of the Alliance.
