Xi meeting with US delegation in Beijing

An unusual and symbolic move by the US delegation to China has drawn international attention, as US officials reportedly threw away every item taken from Chinese authorities before leaving Beijing on Air Force One.

According to sources close to the diplomatic trip, immediately before boarding the plane, members of the American delegation collected all the gifts, emblems, commemorative cards and any other objects given by the Chinese side during the visit and left them in a trash can at the airport.

No objects of Chinese origin were allowed to be transported on the presidential plane.

The move is considered part of the extreme security protocols used by the US during visits to countries considered strategic rivals or at high risk for technological espionage. Sources say the delegation had taken strict security measures before departing for China.

The American officials had left their personal phones, laptops and other electronic devices in the US. During their entire stay in Beijing, they used only temporary phones called “burner phones”, devices commonly used by security agencies and diplomats to avoid eavesdropping, cyber-monitoring or the installation of spyware.

Cybersecurity experts say that even common objects like pens, chargers, electronic cards or souvenirs can be used to embed microchips or hidden listening devices. For this reason, many high-level delegations follow strict rules when visiting countries with which there is a political or military rivalry.

The event reflects the high level of tensions and mistrust between Washington and Beijing, especially at a time when relations between the two superpowers are strained over issues such as artificial intelligence, technology, Taiwan, cybersecurity, trade and global influence.

On social media and international media, the action of the American delegation has been widely commented on. Some have described it as a normal security measure, while others have seen it as a strong political signal that relations between the US and China continue to remain cold and filled with suspicion.
