German prosecutors have charged a pediatrician with 130 counts of sexual abuse, including rape, of children, most of them patients under his care.
The case has shocked public opinion and prompted clinics to strengthen protective measures for children.
The 46-year-old doctor, whose name has not been made public, has been in custody since November after a mother suspected her child had been abused and alerted authorities. He worked at several clinics in Brandenburg, near Berlin.
It is suspected that the crimes were committed between 2013 and 2025, while it has not been revealed how many children may have been abused.
"The accused faces charges of violating sexual autonomy in a total of 130 cases. These include serious sexual abuse of children and rape," the prosecutor's statement said.
According to the investigation, most of the abuses are suspected to have been committed during the exercise of his professional duties at the clinics of the Havelland health group, in the towns of Rathenow and Nauen.
"The accused remains in custody," the prosecution adds, noting that the charges were filed on May 6.
A regional court in Potsdam will now decide whether the case will go to trial.
During the pediatrician's arrest, investigators seized electronic devices believed to contain material relevant to the investigation. According to the Bild newspaper, the mother's complaint came after her child was allegedly abused during treatment in the pediatric ward of the Rathenow hospital.
After the case came to light in January, the Havelland Clinic announced that it had launched an internal investigation with the help of experts and that it would fully cooperate with the prosecution, making any necessary information available.
"We express our condolences and support to all patients who may have been harmed, as well as to their families," the statement said.
The case has also brought similar scandals back to the spotlight in Europe. In France, in May last year, a 74-year-old former surgeon was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing hundreds of patients, most of them under the age of 15. It was considered the largest child abuse trial in the country's history.
Joël Le Scouarnec had worked as a surgeon in public and private hospitals in western France, where he often operated on children with appendicitis. He was accused of 111 rapes and 189 sexual assaults between 1989 and 2014 in around 12 hospitals.
Many of the children were abused while under anesthesia or just waking up from operations, while others were abused in hospital beds. The average age of the victims was 11. The decision further increased pressure on the French government to address failings in the health and justice systems.
