The Pentagon has unexpectedly blocked the deployment of a US brigade of about 4,000 soldiers to Eastern Europe, a decision that has caused concern in NATO countries near the borders with Russia and Ukraine.
According to American media and statements by the Lithuanian Defense Minister, the ban is related to the review of the American military presence in Europe.
The brigade, called “Black Jack,” part of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division, was set to depart from Fort Hood, Texas, on May 1. The soldiers were to be deployed primarily to Poland and other locations on NATO’s eastern flank for a nine-month mission. However, on May 13, the Pentagon suspended their deployment, even though some of the military equipment was already en route to Europe.
Lithuania's Defense Minister stated that "the Pentagon has stopped the rotation of troops in Europe." This means that the US is starting to gradually reduce the replacement of troops that were sent after the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022 by the administration of former President Joe Biden.
There are currently about 85,000 US troops in Europe. Of these, 15,000 to 20,000 were deployed after the war in Ukraine to bolster the defense of NATO allies in the east of the continent. These missions are considered temporary and operate on a rotation system, with new units replacing those that end their service.
The Pentagon reportedly began slowing down these rotations in October last year, when it failed to replace a brigade stationed in Romania. This development could lead to further reductions in the US military presence in Germany and other European countries.
The situation has raised concerns, especially in the Baltic states and countries closer to Russia. Lithuania immediately responded by declaring that its air bases were not used for attacks against Russia. Lithuanian authorities accuse Moscow of a disinformation campaign aimed at straining relations between the Baltic states and NATO.
The Pentagon's decision is also seen in the context of repeated statements by Donald Trump, who has previously warned of the possibility of withdrawing thousands of US soldiers from Germany, Italy and Spain. However, analysts point out that the situation is more complex and is also related to the new US military strategy in Europe.
