"What is the meaning of the Alliance?" - Rubio questions NATO's

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has questioned the meaning of NATO's existence after several allied countries refused to use military bases for US operations during the conflict with Iran.

In an interview with Fox News, Rubio stated that one of the main reasons he supported NATO was the possibility for the US to have access to military bases on the territory of allied countries.

"When NATO partners refuse to use these bases - when this is precisely the main reason why NATO is useful to America - then what is the point of the Alliance?" Rubio said.

He specifically mentioned Spain as one of the countries that, according to him, refused to use American bases during operations against Iran.

"It's starting to look like a relationship where they are allies only when it suits them," Rubio said.

However, the US secretary singled out several countries that, according to him, immediately supported the US, mentioning Portugal in particular.

"They said yes even before we asked them," Rubio said, adding that Poland, Romania and Bulgaria also offered support.

In contrast, he used harsh tones towards Spain.

"Others, like Spain, behaved terribly, just terribly badly," Rubio said, arguing that this raises serious questions about the purpose of the Alliance if the US cannot use military bases in times of conflict.

"Why are we there? Just to protect them, and not to promote our national interests? This is a very legitimate question that we need to answer," he added.
