China's unusual trick to allow Rubio into Beijing: He changes his name,
Marco Rubio in Beijing

Despite sanctions from Beijing, Marco Rubio attended President Donald Trump's meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

But the way this was made possible is quite unusual because, in order to be part of this historic summit, the Chinese government used a little trick, changing the name of the American diplomat to Marco Lu.

According to experts from Beijing, his name is spelled differently in official documents thanks to a linguistic solution and diplomatic protocol from China.

The name change to “Marco Lu” enabled Beijing to welcome Rubio without lifting sanctions, which date back to when Rubio served as a U.S. senator in Florida from 2019 until his appointment to join the Trump administration.

The Chinese government sanctioned him twice in 2020 for speaking out against Beijing's crackdown on Hong Kong, a former British colony that is seeking greater autonomy from China's control.

Rubio, a fierce critic of communism, also criticized China's alleged abuse of the mostly Muslim minority in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in northwestern China.
