Turkey presents its first aircraft carrier "TCG Anadolu", which will mainly transport helicopters and drones.

"This ship will enable us to carry out military and humanitarian operations in every corner of the world," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the inauguration ceremony in Istanbul. The aircraft carrier is a symbol "that will consolidate Turkey's position as a regional leader". The ship is 232 meters long, 32 meters wide and can accommodate 1400 people.

Modification after US sanctions

Initially, Turkey wanted to use F-35B fighter aircraft carriers from the US, which can take off from shorter runways and, in principle, also from TCG Anadolu. But the project had to be changed because the US excluded Turkey from its F-35 program.

The reason for this was Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems. As a result TCG Anadolu had to be modified. The aircraft carrier is manufactured by a Turkish-Spanish consortium at an Istanbul shipyard.

In addition to the helicopters, Turkey wants to launch from the ship unmanned military drones Bayraktar TB3 and Kizilelma manufactured by the Turkish arms company Baykar. Hürjet light attack aircraft can also be launched from the aircraft carrier.
