US President Donald Trump has ordered US military officials to start using military force against drug cartels.

This extraordinary action has sparked a diplomatic clash with Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican president, who insists that American forces will not enter the country.

The directive marks a significant escalation in the US president's aggressive campaign against Latin American cartels, which he has designated as foreign terrorist organizations.

Pentagon officials have begun considering plans to target the groups, sources told the New York Times.

This action opens up the possibility of military operations at sea and on foreign land against criminal groups.

It also raises legal concerns, such as whether killing suspects of crimes outside an area of armed conflict would constitute murder.

Responding to the developments, Sheinbaum said: "The United States will not come to Mexico with military forces.

"We cooperate and cooperate, but there will be no invasion; This is excluded. We have stated this in all the phone calls," she said.
