The clash between Meloni & Trump, who a year ago praised each other in the highest tones, continues...
It seems that there is not much left of the former friendship.
After Trump mocked Meloni for asking him to take a picture with them at the G7 Summit, Meloni called the White House chief a liar. No European leader has responded to Trump so harshly.
Meloni is a right-wing politician, she has no connection to the left. After Meloni's response, Trump said that the Italian prime minister is unpopular.
Meloni did not hesitate to respond again. And he did so like this:
"President Trump, these regular and unprovoked attacks are senseless. As for my popularity, being your friend certainly hasn't helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you."
My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy's national interest, and that is exactly what I have always done.
The use of American bases in Italy is regulated by agreements that we have always respected, and that cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister.
"Italy remains a sovereign nation. In any case, my popularity is not a matter for you. I suggest you focus on yours," Meloni replied.
