President-elect Donald Trump publicly endorsed his Pentagon chief nominee, Pete Hegseth, on Friday at a time when his Senate confirmation has been in question amid concerns over sexual assault allegations, alcohol use and his views on female soldiers on the front lines.

“Pete Hegseth is doing very well,” Mr. Trump wrote on his Truth Social media profile. “He will be a fantastic, high-energy Secretary of Defense.” The president-elect added that “Pete is a WINNER and there is nothing that can be done to change that.”

Hegseth spent much of this week in meetings at the Capitol, trying to assure Republican senators that he has the right skills to lead the Pentagon during President Trump's administration.

He has promised not to drink alcohol if he takes office and has told lawmakers he has not committed sexual assault, while his professional views on female military personnel are under scrutiny. He said last month that women should not serve on the front lines.

President-elect Trump has faced resistance from some of his appointees. Two of his picks for positions in the incoming administration withdrew from nomination after facing strong opposition: Matt Gaetz, the former member of Congress, nominated as Attorney General, and Chad Chronister, the sheriff of Hillsborough County in Florida, nominated as director of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

President-elect Trump's transition team is considering other possible candidates in case Hegseth's nomination fails, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who ran against Trump in the Republican primary. /VOA
